Structure Sensor Calibration

Structure Sensor Calibration

How to calibrate your Structure Sensor scanner

To calibrate your scanner correctly, you will need to perform 3 calibration methods. Instructions to perform all 3 are in this document.

Before starting, make sure your iPad and your app are up to date and check if your scanner is fully charged. Also, take a look if you have the Structure Sensor Calibrator app installed on your iPad, if not, you will need to install it via the App Store.

Stereo calibration

This calibration ensures that both images from both your iPad’s camera and the infrared one integrated in the Structure Sensor are perfectly aligned, one over the other.

The calibration must be done if the infrared looks un-aligned, as such :

  1. Print the Indoor Calibration target and stick it to a wall.
  2. Start the Structure Sensor Calibrator app.
  3. Click on the Standard Calibration button. Click on Begin Calibration. Enable Indoor Mode
  4. Point the scanner towards the target on the wall until you see two images of the target on your screen. Disregard the instruction concerning the surroundings and click on Got it
  5. The scanner will take a couple of pictures with blue dots all over them.

Point your scanner towards a scene with right angles, like the corner of a table. The 2 images will then need to be adjusted so they align, by moving your finger on the screen from left to right or vice versa.

This should result in 2 aligned images. Once satisfactory, you can click on ‘Save Calibation’.

Depth calibration

If you encounter one of these situations:

  1. You start a scan and you don't have a solid red pattern over the body part you are aiming to scan;
  2. You have a broken pattern with holes or only a few red dots;
  3. The scan box is unstable.

After downloading the Calibrator App, click on the question mark in the top left corner.

 Press the blue ‘Perform Refinement’ button, swipe to the left twice, then press on ‘Start Refinement’.

 The device must be held in front of a perfectly flat and mat wall with no decoration. Starting at about 3 or 4 feet, move closer or farther until a solid red pattern can be seen. If a solid pattern cannot be acquired, save and re-run the calibration another time or two to properly calibrate it.

Gravity calibration

When you see an unstable scanning box, that has a tendency to flip, or if the box seems unaligned with the horizon, you need to do a gravity calibration. This calibration is done within the 3DsizeMe app and it is not related to the sensor but within the iPad.

The calibration can be found under the 3DsizeMe settings, under the calibration section. Pressing the ‘Calibrate’ button will open the calibration. The iPad must be aligned vertically for this calibration to work.

Complementary information

If a message appears mentioning that the firmware needs to be updated, please use the Structure app available on the App Store. Follow the instructions. This procedure may take 3 to 5 minutes.
